How to Choose Pile Weatherstrip

# How to Choose Pile Weatherstrip

Pile weatherstrip is a simple component, but the wrong dimensions or options create assembly problems and callbacks. This guide is for engineers specifying door and window sealing strips. It uses verified XINHAI options: PP polypropylene yarn, silicone or non-silicone, adhesive or non-adhesive, and with plastic fin or plain. Available base width is 4–25 mm, pile height is 5–20 mm, base thickness is 0.8±0.15 mm, and length is customized. Pile weatherstrip is used for anti-wind, anti-noise, and anti-dust sealing.

1) Measure your slot: base width A and pile height B

Start with the slot, not the old strip. Measure slot width A with calipers at several points along the frame. A is the base width of the weatherstrip. XINHAI offers base widths from 4 mm to 25 mm. If your slot falls outside that range, ask the manufacturer before assuming a fit. Remember the base thickness is 0.8±0.15 mm; this affects how the base sits in the slot.

Measure pile height B from the base to the top of the pile. XINHAI offers pile heights from 5 mm to 20 mm. Define B from the actual gap between the closed frame and the mating surface, including tolerance stack-up. Do not guess compression. If possible, validate with a sample before committing to a production order.

2) Silicone vs non-silicone

Silicone and non-silicone are both available options. Choose based on your drawing, customer specification, or test requirement. If your application requires silicone, state it clearly on the RFQ and drawing. If it does not, non-silicone can be quoted. Do not assume a performance difference without a datasheet or test. The material is PP polypropylene yarn; silicone or non-silicone is an option, not a default.

3) Adhesive backing or not

Adhesive backing is an option. Non-adhesive is also available. Select based on your assembly method. If the slot mechanically traps the base, non-adhesive may be sufficient. If you need to bond the strip into place, specify adhesive backing. Before finalizing, confirm the adhesive type, release liner, and shelf-life handling with the manufacturer. Adhesive is not a substitute for correct slot dimensions.

4) Fin or plain pile

Pile weatherstrip can be supplied with a plastic fin or as plain pile. A fin adds a plastic profile, so check the slot geometry carefully. Confirm that the base width and pile height still fit with the fin present. If your drawing calls for a fin, specify it. If your housing already has a sealing lip or tight tolerances, plain pile may be easier to integrate. Do not mix fin and plain dimensions without updating the drawing.

5) Colors and density

The verified material is PP polypropylene yarn. Specific colors and densities are not listed in the published verified facts. If color matters for visibility, assembly, or branding, provide a color target and ask for availability. For density, define it in measurable terms—filament count, yarn denier, or grams per meter—or by the performance test it must pass. Avoid vague terms like “dense.” A clear specification prevents disputes.

6) When to ask the manufacturer

Ask XINHAI when your base width A is outside 4–25 mm, pile height B is outside 5–20 mm, or base thickness must hold 0.8±0.15 mm. Ask about custom length, silicone vs non-silicone, adhesive vs non-adhesive, fin vs plain, and color or density requirements. For volume planning, ask for current lead time and capacity. The supplier-stated daily capacity is 300,000 meters, with 20+ production lines and a 2000 sqm factory.

If your procurement requires ISO 9001, note that ISO 9001 was announced in company news in 2019. Ask for current status and relevant documentation; do not rely on a news item alone.
